Dutch private equity and special situations investor\u00a0Kenzoll Capital<\/a>\u00a0has partnered with\u00a0MSF Commercials<\/a>\u00a0to restart operations at the\u00a0Sperrgebiet diamond mine<\/a>, formerly known as the Elizabeth Bay mine, near L\u00fcderitz, in southern\u00a0Namibia<\/a>. The\u00a0Sperrgebiet diamond mine<\/a>\u2019s licences cover 245 364 ha of the\u00a0Sperrgebiet<\/a>, the restricted\u00a0diamond mining<\/a>\u00a0area. It holds onshore diamond resources of 6.3-million carats and offshore diamond resources of 4.2-million carats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership will explore and extract\u00a0heavy mineral sands<\/a>\u00a0and critical metals on these mining licences, which previously have not been explored. Kenzoll Capital<\/a>\u00a0says it has committed over $10-million to\u00a0Namibia<\/a>\u00a0previously and is focused on getting a crucial employer back into operation to support the community and the country. Sperrgebiet diamond mine<\/a>\u00a0owns some of the oldest diamond licences in\u00a0Namibia<\/a>\u00a0and, following regulatory approvals, the investment is expected to reach $50-million as exploration into other minerals and their production takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cElizabeth Bay has spent most of the past eight years out of action and we\u2019re committed to getting the mine producing again, providing jobs and economic value to an area that has relied heavily on diamonds for over a century.\u201cThis partnership is part of our long-term commitment and investment in\u00a0Namibia<\/a>, with diamonds as the starting point and\u00a0critical minerals<\/a>to follow,\u201d says\u00a0Kenzoll Capital<\/a>\u00a0CEO\u00a0Corn\u00e9 Melissen<\/a>.<\/strong> Diamond exports fell from a peak of N$5.1-billion in the final quarter of 2022 to N$1.7-billion in the first quarter of 2025, with the\u00a0Bank of Namibia<\/a>\u00a0warning that falling diamond export earnings posed a major threat to growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSperrgebiet diamond mine<\/a>\u00a0holds a strategic asset in a part of the country that requires investment.
